About Job Role
A warehouse labourer (or warehouse worker / material handler) is responsible for the physical handling, movement, storage, and tracking of goods inside a distribution center or warehouse.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
• Receiving and Unloading: Unload incoming trucks, containers, or rail cars manually or with machinery. Inspect shipments for damage and verify quantities against packing slips and invoices. • Order Picking and Packing: Select items from warehouse shelves based on customer orders. Pack, wrap, and label products securely to prevent damage during shipping. • Loading and Dispatch: Load packed goods and heavy materials onto customer or commercial trucks. • Inventory Management: Count, weigh, sort, and organize stock. Assist with routine cycle counts, spot checks, and periodic physical inventory audits. Update inventory records using barcode scanners or warehouse management systems (WMS). • Equipment Operation: Safely operate material-handling machinery such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, conveyor belts, and (if certified) forklifts or scissor lifts. • Facility Maintenance and Safety: Keep aisles, work areas, and lumber yards clean, tidy, and free of hazards. Adhere strictly to workplace safety rules, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and perform pre-start equipment checks.
Typical Physical and Skill Requirements
• Physical Stamina: Ability to stand and walk for long shifts, bend, twist, and regularly lift heavy items—typically ranging from 50 to 80 pounds depending on the industry (such as lumber or general freight). • Education and Certifications: Most positions require a High School Diploma or equivalent. Certifications like a valid forklift operator ticket are often preferred or required.
